In Jyotish, the Sudarshan Chakra is a single diagram of three concentric charts: the lagna chart in the centre, the Chandra (Moon) chart around it and the Surya (Sun) chart outside. Described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, it lets the astrologer judge each house from all three references at once, so a bhava that is strong from all three stands out clearly.
A note on the name
"Sudarshan Chakra" is best known as the discus of Lord Vishnu. In Jyotish the name belongs to a chart technique: a wheel that combines three ways of counting houses. This page is about the technique.
Why three references
Parashari astrologers already read houses from more than one starting point. The lagna shows the body and circumstances; the Moon shows the mind and how life is experienced; the Sun shows the soul, vitality and authority. A planet can sit in a good house from the lagna and a difficult one from the Moon. Reading three charts side by side means flicking between screens and holding the counts in memory. The Sudarshan Chakra puts them on one wheel.
How the chakra is drawn
The wheel has three rings divided into twelve segments:
- Inner ring: the lagna chart. The ascendant sign is the first house.
- Middle ring: the Chandra lagna. The Moon's sign is the first house.
- Outer ring: the Surya lagna. The Sun's sign is the first house.
Each segment shows the sign and planets for that house number counted from each reference. Read one segment outward and you see, for example, the 10th house from the lagna, the 10th from the Moon and the 10th from the Sun together.
What BPHS says about using it
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra gives a chapter to the Sudarshana Chakra. The principle commonly drawn from it is simple: judge each bhava from all three rings. When a house and its lord are well disposed from all three, its significations tend to be more pronounced; when they are afflicted from all three, the difficulties tend to be more consistent. Mixed results across the rings point to mixed experience of that house.
Practical habits that follow from this:
- Benefics and malefics by ring. Note which benefics and malefics occupy or aspect the house in each ring.
- Lords from each reference. The 10th lord from the lagna, from the Moon and from the Sun may be three different planets. Check each one's strength.
- Agreement before emphasis. A theme that repeats across all three rings deserves more weight in the reading than one seen from a single reference.
The Sudarshan year progression
The chakra is also used for timing. In the Sudarshan dasha (often called Sudarshan Chakra dasha), each year of life activates one house, counted from all three references at once: the first year activates the 1st house from lagna, Moon and Sun; the second year the 2nd house; and so on. The cycle repeats every twelve years, so the 13th year again activates the 1st house. Finer subdivisions into months and days are also taught.
Astrologers often use this alongside Vimshottari rather than in place of it: the Vimshottari lord shows which planet's agenda is running, and the Sudarshan year shows which house is in focus.
A short exercise on a sample chart
Take a sample chart and pick the 10th house:
- Note the sign and occupants of the 10th from the lagna, the Moon and the Sun.
- Find the three 10th lords and note their dignity and house placement.
- Mark whether benefics or malefics influence the 10th in each ring.
- Write one line on what agrees across the rings and what differs.
This takes minutes on a single wheel and considerably longer with three separate charts.
Where it lives on the desk
On Bodhlok the Sudarshan Chakra sits in the D1 module next to the rashi chart and Bhava Chalit, calculated from the same birth data and ayanamsa. Students can study it without redrawing charts by hand, and teachers can project the same sample chart for a class.

Frequently asked questions
What is Sudarshan Chakra in astrology?
It is a diagram of three concentric charts counted from the lagna, the Moon and the Sun, described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It lets the astrologer judge each house from all three references at once.
How do you read the Sudarshan Chakra?
Read each house segment across the three rings: its sign, occupants, aspects and the strength of its lord from each reference. A theme that agrees across all three carries more weight.
What is Sudarshan Chakra dasha?
A timing method where each year of life activates one house, counted from lagna, Moon and Sun together. The first year activates the 1st house, the second year the 2nd, and the cycle repeats every twelve years.
Is the Sudarshan Chakra better than the lagna chart?
It isn't a replacement. It combines the lagna chart with the Moon and Sun charts so you can see where the three agree, which is useful for confirming a judgement.
