Mula is the nineteenth nakshatra, spanning 0°00' to 13°20' of Dhanu (Sagittarius). Its lord is Ketu, its deity is Nirriti and its symbol is a bundle of roots. Practitioners read it through investigation, uprooting and getting to the root of things, check the Jyeshtha-Mula gandanta at its start, and judge Mula placements through Ketu and Jupiter rather than through fear.

The themes practitioners work with
"Mula" means root. The symbol and the deity point the same way: going to the base of a matter, pulling something out by the root, and the dissolution that makes room for what follows. In practice Mula is associated with research, investigation, philosophy and a restless wish to know the basis of things.
Ketu as lord adds detachment and intensity of focus; Guru as sign lord adds the search for meaning and principle. Many practitioners see the best expressions of Mula where Jupiter is strong and well placed, because it gives the investigation a direction.
As with any nakshatra, these are tendencies. The condition of Ketu and Jupiter, aspects to the Moon or lagna and the dashas decide how Mula shows up in a particular chart.
The four padas
Dhanu is a dual sign, so its navamshas start from the 5th sign, Mesha. Each Mula pada is 3°20':
Pada | Degrees in Dhanu | Navamsha | Common emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|
1 | 0°00' to 3°20' | Mesha | Drive and initiative; also the gandanta zone |
2 | 3°20' to 6°40' | Vrishabha | Resources, steadiness, values |
3 | 6°40' to 10°00' | Mithuna | Inquiry, writing, debate |
4 | 10°00' to 13°20' | Karka | Feeling, home, protectiveness |
The Jyeshtha-Mula gandanta and "Mula dosha"
The junction where Vrishchika (water) ends and Dhanu (fire) begins is one of the three gandanta zones. The end of Jyeshtha and the start of Mula pada 1 lie here. Traditional texts single out births in this zone, and popular tradition speaks of "Mula dosha", including beliefs about effects on family members, with a shanti ritual prescribed.
A professional approach is calm and specific. Note whether the Moon or lagna falls in the gandanta degrees, then read the whole chart: the strength of the Moon, Ketu and Jupiter, the houses involved and the dashas. A Moon at 8° Dhanu is not in gandanta at all, though popular tradition often treats any Mula Moon the same way. Clients should never leave a consultation afraid of their nakshatra.
Reading Mula in a chart: a checklist
- Which point is in Mula? The Moon, the lagna or a planet. The Moon's nakshatra drives the Vimshottari sequence.
- Ketu's condition. As nakshatra lord, Ketu's house, sign and conjunctions colour every planet in Mula.
- Jupiter's condition. As sign lord, Guru's dignity in D1 and D9 shows how well Dhanu's themes are supported.
- Pada and navamsha. Read the navamsha sign and its lord.
- Gandanta check for anything in the first 3°20' of Dhanu, with an exact degree.
- Dashas. A Moon in Mula opens with the balance of Ketu mahadasha followed by Shukra's twenty years.
Mula alongside the other Ketu nakshatras
Ketu rules three nakshatras, each at the start of a fire sign: Ashwini (Mesha), Magha (Simha) and Mula (Dhanu). Each one also sits at a water-fire junction and therefore carries a gandanta portion. Studying the three together is a good way for students to separate what comes from Ketu from what comes from the sign and deity.
Where you see it on the desk
On Bodhlok, the D1 module lists every planet's nakshatra, pada and exact degree, so a gandanta placement is easy to confirm, and the navamsha opens beside it. The Vimshottari timeline starts from the Moon's nakshatra automatically.
