Kundli Matching Beyond 36 Gunas: What Practitioners Check

Written byBodhlokPublished on27 Oct 2026CategoryChart methods

Kundli matching (Ashtakoota milan) scores two Moon charts across eight kootas worth 36 gunas; 18 is the usual minimum. Experienced astrologers treat that score as a first filter only. They then read each chart on its own: the 7th house and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsha (D9), Mangal dosha in both charts, and the dashas running around the marriage.

The problem with a single number

Families often arrive with a printout that says "24 out of 36" and a question: is this match good? A practitioner knows the guna score compares only the two Moons. It says nothing about the 7th house, the Navamsha or the timing in either chart. This guide covers the Ashtakoota system properly, then the checks a careful astrologer adds.

The eight kootas and 36 gunas

Ashtakoota milan compares the bride's and groom's Moon sign and nakshatra across eight factors. Points rise with each koota:

Koota

Maximum

What it compares

Varna

1

Spiritual temperament by Moon sign

Vashya

2

Mutual influence between the signs

Tara

3

Nakshatra count from one to the other

Yoni

4

Animal symbol of the nakshatras

Graha Maitri

5

Friendship of the Moon-sign lords

Gana

6

Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa nature

Bhakoot

7

Relative position of the Moon signs

Nadi

8

Adi, Madhya or Antya nadi of the nakshatras

Total

36

Common practice treats 18 or more as acceptable for further consideration, and higher scores as more harmonious. The score is a starting point, not a verdict.

Nadi and Bhakoot: the two heavy kootas

Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7 points) together carry 15 of the 36 gunas, so a zero in either drops the total sharply.

  • Nadi dosha arises when both Moons fall in nakshatras of the same nadi. Traditional texts and teachers list exceptions; a commonly cited one is when both share the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in different signs.
  • Bhakoot dosha arises when the Moon signs are 2-12, 6-8 or 5-9 from each other. A commonly cited exception applies when the two Moon-sign lords are the same planet or are natural friends.

Traditions differ on exceptions, so record which rules you applied. A good matching screen shows the dosha and the cancellation it checked, rather than just a final number.

What practitioners check beyond the gunas

Matching compares two people; the gunas compare only two Moons. The checks below look at each chart in full.

  1. The 7th house and its lord in each chart. Placement, dignity, aspects and the condition of its dispositor.
  2. Karakas. Shukra (Venus) for marriage generally, and Guru (Jupiter) as well in a woman's chart in many traditions. Note their strength in D1 and D9.
  3. Navamsha (D9). The D9 lagna, its 7th house and the dignity of the 7th lord there. Many astrologers give D9 as much weight as D1 for marriage.
  4. Mangal dosha in both charts. Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th (from the lagna, and in many traditions from the Moon and Venus as well). Compare both charts and their cancellations; when both carry it, many traditions treat it as balanced.
  5. Dashas around the marriage. Whether the periods running in both charts support the 7th house in the years ahead.
  6. The couple's own question. Health, family and career considerations come from the people, not the chart. Matching informs the conversation; it does not replace it.

Marriage muhurta comes after matching

Once a match is accepted, the date is a separate question. Marriage muhurta looks at Tarabala and Chandrabala for both, Gurubala, Graha Maitri, the tithi, nakshatra and lagna of the moment, and avoids combust Guru or Shukra periods. Bodhlok has a dedicated marriage muhurta module for this step.

How the desk lays it out

On Bodhlok, kundli matching shows the eight kootas with points, the Nadi and Bhakoot result with the exception that was checked, and Mangal dosha for both charts. Both D1 and D9 charts open beside the table, so the astrologer moves from the score to the charts without changing screens. The AI consult can summarise the comparison in Hindi or English only after the calculation and rule layers have run; the judgement on the match stays with the astrologer.

Speaking to families responsibly

A low score is not a sentence, and a high score is not a promise. Explain what each koota measures, show what the full charts add, and avoid fear. Remedies sold as a fix for a guna score have no place in a professional consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How many gunas are needed for kundli matching?

Common practice treats 18 out of 36 as the minimum for further consideration. Practitioners then check the individual charts, because the score compares only the two Moons.

What are the 8 kootas in kundli matching?

Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8), totalling 36 gunas.

Is Nadi dosha cancelled in some cases?

Many traditions list exceptions, such as both Moons in the same sign but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in different signs. Teachers differ, so note which rule you applied.

Is guna milan enough for marriage matching?

No. Careful astrologers also read the 7th house and lord, Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsha (D9), Mangal dosha in both charts and the running dashas.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot dosha occurs when the two Moon signs are 2-12, 6-8 or 5-9 from each other, giving zero of the 7 Bhakoot points. It is commonly considered cancelled when the Moon-sign lords are the same or friendly.
